BaF2 is known for its exceptional transparency across a wide range of wavelengths, spanning from the ultraviolet to the infrared spectrum. This unique property allows it to transmit light efficiently from 150-200nm to 11-11.5μm, making it an ideal material for crafting optical components like lenses. In the realm of infrared spectroscopy, BaF2 is frequently employed in windows for various applications, notably in the analysis of fuel oil. When considering its transmittance characteristics, BaF2 exhibits a relatively low transmittance of 0.60 at 200nm. However, this value significantly increases to 0.96-0.97 at 500nm and remains high up to 9μm, after which it gradually decreases (0.85 at 10μm and 0.42 at 12μm). The refractive index of BaF2 ranges around 1.46 from 700nm to 5μm. Apart from its optical applications, Barium Fluoride is utilized as a preopacifying agent and in the production of enamel and glazing frits. Additionally, it finds usage in metallurgical processes as a molten bath for refining aluminum.
